Godalming retain the Dorking Moyce Cup
Godalming swimming club started 2010 in fine form as they retained the Dorking Moyce Cup on Saturday night in a packed Dorking Sports Centre. The young Godalming team managed by Paul Nash had many swimmers competing in their first competitive gala for the club and were up against top teams from Sutton, Wey Valley, Tonbridge as well as two teams from the hosts Dorking. Godalming started slow and it wasn’t until the 11th race when Charlie Needell sprinted to take the under 10 boys 50m freestyle setting a new personal best of 44.44 seconds that they started to make their move. Freya Mitchel, Rachel Ewing, Millie Stevens and Eleanor Cooper followed-up this up with a win in the girls under 14 medley relay but at the half-way stage Godalming were still in 4th place trailing the leaders Tonbridge by 13 points.
First timer Luke Brooks set a personal best of 21.82 seconds to win the under
10 boys 25m butterfly and Henry Mooney came first in the under 14 boys 50m
butterfly with a personal best of 39.69 to kept Godalming in contention. A win
in the breast stroke relay by Emily Bagley, Charlie Needell, Abigail
Pritchard, Kieran Nash, Rachel Ewing and Andrew Oakey then pushed Godalming up
to 2nd place after 28 of the 39 races trailing Tonbridge by 8
points. Head coach Martin Young said “I knew we stood a good chance at this
stage, we had trained hard for the relays and I was confident that the team
could bring it home”.
Front runners Tonbridge were leading all the way into the last race of the evening, the freestyle squadron relay involving boys and girls from each age group, but the Godalming team of Emily Bagley, Luke Brooks, Abigail Pritchard, Kieran Nash, Eleanor Cooper and Andrew Oakey kept their heads and powered home to win the race and retain the Dorking Moyce Cup by 2.5 points finishing 1st on 135 points, with close rivals Wey Valley in 2nd on 132.5 points and Tonbridge dropping to 3rd on 131 points.
Team manager Paul Nash couldn’t believe how well his young team had performed “It was a great team effort, especially by the new kids some of them swimming their first races for us. We were behind all the way and we knew we had to do the business in the squadron and managed to do just enough to win”.
